Event Summary
This event was seen by many to be the first real test for
Evilswarm, which had received a large amount of hype leading up to its release.
As many predicted, the deck didn’t do too much – while it did put two players
into the Top 32, neither of them got any farther. This offers some proof to the
widely-held consensus that, at least without Kerykeion, Evilswarm are NOT all
they are cracked up to be, and the continuing superdominance of Mermails in the
Top Cut (and eventual victory) shows they aren’t even slowing down what should be a decent matchup. Aside
from the evil virus, Hidden Arsenal 7 shook up the Top Cut as expected, with
four Infernity and two Gadget players boosted by the release
of Lavalval Chain and Tin Goldfish / Daigusto Emeral.
This was also a notable event for the sheer number of
recognizable names that all managed to top – Satoshi Kato (Infernity), Kris
Perovic (Dino Rabbit), Pat Hoban (Infernity), Tyree Tinsley (Mermail), Andrew
Fredella (Mermail), Simon He (Mermail), Sean Montague (Fire Fist) and Paul
Levitin (Mermail), the last of which even making it through all 11 rounds undefeated. An accomplishment like that
is hard to believe, but it looks like skilled players from older times can
definitely come back into the game and take advantage of how things have
developed. There was also a narrow miss from ARG’s Frazier Smith, who came in
34th after Swiss while allegedly playing Prophecy.
