The point of reminding you guys of this is to illustrate the fact that I've been "stuck" with Blackwings for a little while now, and probably will be for at least a little bit longer. And in this time, naturally my imagination has wandered and I've thought about things that could make Blackwings better. So for today, here's a short post about some card ideas I've had. First up:
Dark / Level 4 / Winged-Beast / 1500 / 1000
This card cannot be destroyed by battle. This effect cannot be negated. If this card is in your Graveyard: You can return 1 face-up card you control to your hand; Special Summon this card from the Graveyard. You can only use this effect of [name] once per Duel.
I don't have a name for this monster, partly owing to the rather creative naming schemes used for the rest of the Blackwings. But the basic point of this card is to create a new Blackwing that emulates two of the cards that I've noticed put in some serious work for the theme: Spirit Reaper and Zephyros the Elite. Spirit Reaper is really great in Blackwings because in addition to giving you an easy way to stabilize your field presence which is essential to the deck, it also has plenty of opportunities to cut into your opponent's hand thanks to how easy it can be to clear their best cards, thanks to cards like Kalut, Gale and Icarus Attack. Zephyros is useful because it can create explosive plays without actually needing to be in your hand or on the field, which contributes greatly to the flexibility of the deck.
So basically, my goal was to create an on-theme monster who could provide both stability and more raw power. I went with making it a Level 4 to make Rank 4 plays easier to execute, which is going to become more and more important after LVAL drops. Making him 1500 gives you more flexibility in Shura summons, and his battle protection effect can't be negated so those exact plays have fewer drawbacks. I really wish this card was real. On to the next idea!
Black Cyclone
Normal Trap
Special Summon up to 2 Level 4 or lower "Blackwing" monsters from your deck whose combined total ATK is 3300 or less. Those monsters cannot attack, and are destroyed during your 2nd End Phase after this card's activation.
What you're seeing here is a Blackwing version of Geargiagear or Bujincarnation. Another thing Blackwings are lacking are explosive plays that don't take a lot of investment, and this card helps to solve that problem. There isn't much else to say here - if you've ever seen Geargiagear or Bujincarnation in action, then you know how powerful it is to have a 1-card Extra Deck play.
There is a slight chance that we'll see some love for Blackwings in the upcoming Primal Origin set, so if that does happen, I hope it does something nice for the deck. But until then, a man can always dream. Thanks for reading.
